What Is Breast MRI?

Breast MRI uses magnetic fields and radio waves to create detailed images of breast tissue. At The Women’s Imaging Center in Mount Vernon, Washington, breast MRI may be recommended when additional information is needed beyond mammography or breast ultrasound.

Breast MRI is a highly sensitive imaging exam. It is not a replacement for mammography, but it can be an important additional tool when recommended by your provider. Because MRI provides detailed images of breast tissue, it may help evaluate findings that are difficult to fully understand with other imaging exams.

When Breast MRI May Be Recommended

Your provider may recommend a breast MRI for several reasons. Breast MRI may be used as part of screening for patients who are considered at higher risk for breast findings. It may also be used when mammography or ultrasound does not provide enough information about a finding.

For patients who have received a diagnosis requiring additional breast care, breast MRI may help evaluate the extent of findings and provide additional information for care planning. It may also be used in certain follow-up situations based on prior imaging, symptoms, or provider recommendations.

Because breast MRI is very sensitive, it may identify findings that require additional imaging or follow-up. This is not necessarily cause for concern. It may simply mean more information is needed before a final recommendation can be made.

Preparing for Breast MRI

Breast MRI exams require contrast material, which is given through an IV to help highlight areas of concern. Breast MRI is typically performed with contrast unless otherwise specified or contraindicated.

MRI does not use radiation. However, because MRI uses a strong magnet, it is important to tell our team if you have an implanted medical device, metal in your body, a pacemaker, a history of kidney disease, a contrast allergy, claustrophobia, or any chance you may be pregnant.

You will be asked to remove jewelry, watches, hairpins, hearing aids, removable dental work, or other metal or electronic items before the exam.

What to Expect and Results

The care team will help position you for the exam and provide instructions before imaging begins.

A radiologist will review your breast MRI and send a report to your referring provider. Depending on the findings, your provider may recommend routine follow-up, additional imaging, short-term monitoring, or biopsy.
