What Is an Image-Guided Breast Biopsy?

A breast biopsy may be recommended when imaging shows an area that cannot be clearly identified as benign. At The Women’s Imaging Center in Mount Vernon, Washington, breast biopsies are performed using imaging guidance to help accurately target the area of concern.

A biopsy involves removing a small tissue sample so it can be tested by a pathologist. A biopsy recommendation can feel stressful, but it does not always mean there is a serious finding. Many breast biopsies result in benign findings. The purpose of a biopsy is to get clear answers so your provider can determine the most appropriate next step in care.

Why a Breast Biopsy May Be Recommended

A breast biopsy may be recommended after mammography, breast ultrasound, breast MRI, or a combination of imaging exams. It may be used to evaluate a lump, calcifications, an area of tissue change, or another finding that needs tissue sampling.

Imaging can provide important information about an area of concern, but some findings require a tissue sample to determine whether they are benign or need additional treatment.

Types of Image Guidance

The type of breast biopsy depends on how the area is best seen. Some biopsies are guided by ultrasound, while others may be guided by mammography or MRI. Imaging guidance allows the radiologist to locate the area accurately and collect a sample from the correct location.

Your care team will explain which type of biopsy is recommended and provide instructions before your appointment.

What to Expect During a Breast Biopsy

Most image-guided breast biopsies are minimally invasive outpatient procedures. Local anesthetic is used to numb the area before the sample is taken. You may feel pressure during the procedure, but the area should be numb.

After the biopsy, the care team will provide instructions for caring for the biopsy site. You may be asked to limit certain activities for a short period of time. Some bruising, tenderness, or mild swelling can occur after the procedure.

Before your appointment, please tell our team if you take aspirin, blood thinners, or other medications that may affect bleeding. Please also let us know about any allergies, recent illnesses, or medical conditions. You may be asked to avoid certain medications before the procedure.

Biopsy Results and Follow-Up

The tissue sample is sent to a pathologist for review. Results are shared with your referring provider, who will discuss the findings and next steps with you. Depending on the result, recommendations may include routine follow-up, additional imaging, surgical consultation, or other care.
